In order to make the learning expectations more apparent and clear for students, I have expanded an assignment we are currently doing in PHE1 and PHE2. While using the heart rate monitors in class, the students are expected to analyze graphs that are produced from the heart rate monitor throughout the duration of a class. They are given an assignment to do to label the graph as well as answer questions. I am hoping the students will better understand the information by including more background information in the assignment and requiring students to seek out more information from their graphs.

This school year, I have worked towards this standard by introducing forms of technology. One of the activities that the students were given was to create a Badminton skill video. The video was to include an analysis of a high level Badminton athlete and an analysis of the student's own skills in Badminton, especially as it related to the skill components of fitness. By doing this assignment, it allowed those students who may have difficulty in performing the skills to be able to show understanding and mastery of the knowledge and understanding of the skills and how he/she may be able to correct and improve his/her own skills.
The video below is an example of one student's assignment.
Standard B6: Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of their students
Benchmarks:
Differentiates content, process, product, and /or learning environment
Differentiates according to students’ interest, readiness, and learning profile
Differentiates according to English language proficiency
Differentiates to promote literacy learning

In my teaching, I have attempted to give all students the opportunity to learn and improve in their playing ability in various sports. One of the ways that I have worked towards doing this is by showing the students the skills in various sports in written and diagram version. I have worked towards creating documents for each sport, breaking down each of the skills to provide students with more clarity and description on how to complete that skill. Students can then use the documents in class to analyze their own or their peers performance in various skills and also learn how to make corrections in their performance.
Area C Professional Responsibilities Standard C2: Fosters effective communication
Benchmarks:
Communicates in a timely manner with students, colleagues, and parents.
Communicates in a clear, respectful and appropriate manner.
Reflection
In this area of timely and effective communication, I feel that it is an area in which I have been able to improve throughout the year, but also an area in which I can still work on improving. At times I do find it challenging to respond to the many forms of communication effectively, especially in responding to emails quickly. It is also a difficult area in which to balance as the forms of technology are constantly available to me at all hours of the day. I must work on being able to balance the time of day in which I am communicating and respect my own personal time, while still being able to provide effective communication to my students and my colleagues.
Standard C3: Fosters positive relationships within the learning community
Benchmarks:
Cultivates a professional working relationship with colleagues
Establishes and maintains relationships with parents and students to support student growth and development
Demonstrates dedication in their care and commitment to students
Supports SAS vision, mission, core values and EAGLES
Participates in, and supports, team decision making and team-building

Myself and my colleague, Niall Gibson, presented a workshop on the use of iPads in teaching PE and in coaching. We presented various ways that iPads could be used for convenience of recording data, organization, video feedback and analysis, and many other ways. We had positive feedback in the information that was gained by our colleagues who attended the workshop.
Area D Learning Environment Standard D2: Teacher and students demonstrate a positive disposition toward learning
Benchmarks:
Models and encourages supportive and positive language
Fosters student enthusiasm for, and curiosity about, the discipline
Establishes a collaborative environment

In my work with the Middle School Health teachers and students, I feel that I have demonstrated a positive disposition toward learning. My students have also shown enthusiasm and collaboration in their learning. One of the assignments that the PHE 2 students did was to create an advocacy campaign for middle school students. The example given below is a group of students who worked together to create a poster campaign for grade 7 and 8 students. The poster campaign focused on encouraging positive self image and body image for those students.
